The progress of the output of publications in cardiovascular medicine originating from Turkey’s institutions were evaluated based on data of the Web of Science. After excusion of meeting abstracts and letters to the editor, articles in full-text appearing in source publications of Science Citation Index CD Edition alone were included. A weighted credit system was used for items published jointly with a foreign or a noncardiological Turkish institution. Turkey’s publications rose to 161 articles were and her share of world publication to 8.6 per mille. Though the median impact factor of periodicals publishing these articles remained at 1.22 in 3 consecutive years, papers published in journals with an impact factor 2 or over was unchanged around 22, while the observed rise involved those with an impact factor below 2.
As opposed to 126 articles in adult cardiology, 24 papers were registered in cardiovascular surgery and 11 in pediatric cardiology in 2005. In general, the performances of medical faculties in Anatolia including particularly Turkey’s Advanced Specialty Hospital, GATA and the S. Ersek Surgical Center were satisfactory this year; in contradistinction to certain centers in Ankara and Izmir. Time is ripe for modifying the regulation for academic promotion by seeking additional conditions.
